The risk of infection with the human papillomavirus is shockingly high. One in 10 persons has been exposed to this virus over the course of their lives.
One of the most important things when we speak of protection or fighting the virus is to have a strong immune system that can get rid of the virus.
But do you know what immunity is and why it is important to have a strong immune system?
Immunity is the body’s resistance to infections, bacteria, viruses, and fungi (Find more about what immunity is and what helps to boost the immune system in previous articles}.
The immune system oversees all body organs 24 hours a day, watching for changes of functions and occurrences of foreign bodies (for examples, attacks of viruses).
An important function of the immune system is its capacity to recognize “foreign” from “own” bodies. Since it is always ready to fight, the immune system maintains the physical health of the body, with its cells constantly fighting battles on multiple fronts – with all kinds of foreign tissues and harmful microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and others).
You can imagine how the human blood contains a whole “army”, ready to attack at any moment. These are the immune cells, which enter the scene whenever there is an intruder in the human body. The immune cells detect and destroy everything they perceive as a foreign body. When they win against the intruder, some of them keep the memory of it to the smallest details and how it can be destroyed. When the same intruder appears again, these cells become activated and immediately start multiplying and producing a large number of specially trained ‘soldiers’. These are antibodies that will win against the intruder again.
And now imagine how unpleasant and even scary it is when the immune system, with the whole life-saving army, is weakened and exhausted. There are many reasons why the immune system may be weakened, for example: stress, severe traumas, burns, chronic diseases, prolonged treatment with medications and some antibiotics, pollution, contaminated water, poor quality food, overweight and underweight, extreme and poor diets, starving, protein deficiency, smoking and alcohol abuse, physical and mental exhaustion, insomnia, and mental strain.
The health of the immune system determines how often we get ill and how quick we will recuperate.
How do we know that our immune system is weakened?
The poor functioning of the immune system is hard to remain unnoticed. Most people have cold once or twice a year. People with a weakened immune system get ill all the time. Other symptoms which indicate that our immune system is weakened are:
- Digestion problems;
- joint pain;
- muscle weakness;
- skin problems;
How to boost your immune system?
If you are strong and energetic, everything is in order. But if you feel weak, and your energy is low, your immune system is probably weakened. It is time to take measures and boost your immunity in this situation.
